Safety code for journalists released by news safety group
A new safety code for journalists working in hostile environments is calling for appropriate safety training and adequate safety equipment for journalists.
The code, drawn up by the International News Safety Institute (INSI) and endorsed by the ABU News Group, urges news organizations to put safety before competitive advantage. The code also says assignments to war and other danger zones must be voluntary and should only involve experienced news gatherers and those under direct supervision.
Additionally, the declaration says freedom of expression and a free press are critical to the continued development of nations, to the end of corruption and to the alleviation of poverty. It also denounces the killings, attacks on, and unwarranted detentions of journalists and other news professionals.
